Dr. Srinivasa R. Raghavan

Professor/Chair University of Maryland, College Park Dept. of Chemical & Biomolecular Engineering

Dr. Raghavan is a Full Professor and holds the Patrick & Marguerite Sung Chair in the Department of Chemical & Biomolecular Engineering at the University of Maryland, College Park (UMD). He conducts research on nanotechnology and advanced materials for various applications. His research has resulted in more than 190 publications and 20 U.S. patents, which have been cited more than 18,000 times. He has been named a Fellow of the Society of Rheology.

At UMD, he has been recognized both for his teaching and his research, including being named a Distinguished Scholar-Teacher in 2017, winning the College of Engineering’s Outstanding Researcher Award in 2022, and the UMD Invention of the Year in 2009 and 2022. He is also the scientific cofounder of four startup companies based on technologies invented in his laboratory. A product from one of the companies to stop bleeding (Rapid-Seal Wound Gel-made from crab / shrimp shells) is currently available in pharmacies across the country.

Dr. Raghavan is the lead scientist on Green Logic’s current Maryland Industrial Partnerships (MIPS) grant. He has developed the first prototypes of a compostable-on-demand-sturdy-bio-plastic bag designed to eliminate food waste in restaurants, commercial food service facilities and in USA-home settings. The food waste saved from landfills will become nutrient dense compost for USA-sustainable food production. GL is in the 2nd-phase of this grant in which Dr. Raghavan will collaborate with Dr. Lo & Ben Friton at the Reed Center for commercial scale field testing/composting of the bio-plastic bag.
